88 Percentile Options: The IIT MBA Path Nobody Talks About

A question appeared on Reddit recently that captured something MBA aspirants rarely discuss openly.

"Should I bet on IITs with 88.62 percentile as a general non-engineer female?"

The poster had a valid concern. With an 88 percentile, the traditional IIM path seemed closed. The new IIMs were an option, but the brand value felt uncertain. And then there was this alternative that coaching centers rarely emphasize: IIT MBA programs.

This is the path nobody talks about. Not because it is bad, but because it does not fit the standard CAT-to-IIM narrative that dominates MBA preparation culture.

Let us change that.

Why IIT MBA Programs Fly Under the Radar

The MBA ecosystem in India operates on simple heuristics. CAT score leads to IIM call. Higher CAT means better IIM. Everything else is a consolation prize.

This mental model ignores something significant: IITs have been running management programs for decades. DoMS IIT Delhi started in 1993. SJMSOM IIT Bombay began in 1995. These are not new experiments. They are established programs with alumni networks spanning three decades.

So why do they remain under-discussed?

1. The Engineering Dominance Narrative

IITs are synonymous with engineering in public perception. When someone says "IIT graduate," the default assumption is BTech, not MBA. This cognitive association means management programs at IITs simply do not register in most aspirants' mental maps.

2. Smaller Batch Sizes

IIM Ahmedabad's 2026-28 batch has 458 students across PGP and PGP-FABM. In NIRF data, the IIT departments graduated between 49 students (IIT Kanpur) and 125 students (VGSoM) in 2023-24. Smaller batches mean fewer alumni making noise, fewer LinkedIn posts, and less visibility in placement season coverage.

3. Coaching Center Incentives

Coaching centers optimize for the IIM funnel. Their marketing, their success stories, their preparation strategies all center on the IIM system. IIT MBA programs, with their different admission criteria and processes, do not fit this template as cleanly.

4. Category-Specific Confusion

Each IIT programme publishes its own composite-score formula, with different weights for CAT, academics, work experience and diversity. This complexity discourages exploration. Aspirants default to what they understand: CAT percentile to IIM cutoff.

The IIT MBA Landscape

This section lists only what can be checked on official pages: NIRF 2025 rank, median pay for the batch that graduated in 2023-24 (NIRF data), and the latest institute report where one is available. NIRF 2026 rankings had not been released when this post was updated.

NIRF counts each department's two-year PG programmes together, so a department's count can be larger than its MBA batch alone.

• SJMSOM IIT Bombay, batch 2024-26 (official report): average Rs 28.16 lakh, median Rs 26 lakh, highest Rs 53.80 lakh, 51 recruiting companies, 35.7% of the batch received pre-placement offers
• DoMS IIT Madras, batch 2023-25 (official page): average Rs 17.9 lakh, median Rs 18.0 lakh, highest Rs 35.5 lakh
• SJMSOM IIT Bombay fee for 2026-28: Rs 15,55,800 for general, EWS and OBC-NCL candidates, and Rs 7,55,800 for SC, ST and PwD candidates

What Each Programme Publishes About Selection

VGSoM IIT Kharagpur (2026-28): The minimum CAT 2025 percentile to be considered for shortlisting is 90 for General and EWS, 81 for OBC, and 60 for SC, ST and PwD. The shortlisting score adds the CAT scaled score (out of 20) and an application rating, with four marks added for women. The final score weighs the application rating at 20, CAT at 40 (VARC 20, DILR 10, QA 10) and the WAT-PI at 40.

DoMS IIT Madras (2026-28): Shortlisting uses a composite score built from CAT (75% weight), past academics, work experience, gender diversity and academic discipline. Shortlisted candidates then sit a personal interview and a reflective writing test. The department received 4,871 applications in that cycle. Work experience is not compulsory, and candidates with 24 to 36 months of experience receive the maximum weight for it.

SJMSOM IIT Bombay (2026-28): Shortlisted candidates were invited to campus from 5 to 8 March 2026. The school does not publish a percentile cutoff on the pages we checked.

DMS IIT Delhi: Candidates who qualify in CAT and apply are shortlisted and invited for an interview at IIT Delhi.

This post does not quote percentile cutoffs for IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kanpur, because none could be confirmed from the institutes' own pages and unofficial trackers disagree with one another. Check each department's page after the CAT 2026 result.

IIT MBA vs New IIMs: The Real Comparison

This is the decision many 85-92 percentile scorers face. Do you join a new IIM (Sirmaur, Jammu, Bodh Gaya) or explore IIT MBA options?

Brand Recognition

IIT MBA Advantage:

The "IIT" brand is globally recognized. Recruiters in tech, manufacturing, and consulting understand what IIT means. This brand travels well internationally. An MBA from IIT Delhi or IIT Bombay carries immediate credibility.

New IIM Reality:

New IIMs face brand dilution challenges. While "IIM" carries weight, recruiters increasingly distinguish between established and newer IIMs. A recruiter who eagerly hires from IIM Ahmedabad may be uncertain about IIM Jammu.

Verdict: IIT MBA programs often have stronger brand recognition than new IIMs, particularly in technical and manufacturing sectors.

Placement Quality

Median pay, batch that graduated in 2023-24 (NIRF data):

• SJMSOM IIT Bombay: Rs 26.73 lakh
• DMS IIT Delhi: Rs 22.05 lakh
• VGSoM IIT Kharagpur: Rs 20.65 lakh
• DoMS IIT Madras: Rs 16.78 lakh
• IIM Jammu: Rs 15.0 lakh
• IIM Sambalpur: Rs 13.15 lakh
• IIM Bodh Gaya: Rs 13.0 lakh
• IIM Sirmaur: Rs 12.98 lakh

Verdict: All six IIT programmes in the table above report higher medians than these four newer IIMs. The gap is about Rs 2 lakh at IIT Madras and Rs 12 to 14 lakh at IIT Bombay.

Fee Structure

2026-28 fees:

• SJMSOM IIT Bombay: Rs 15.56 lakh (general, EWS, OBC-NCL)
• IIM Jammu: Rs 22.81 lakh
• For reference, IIM Lucknow: Rs 20.75 lakh, and IIM Bangalore: Rs 26.0 lakh

Verdict: SJMSOM costs about Rs 7.3 lakh less than IIM Jammu (22.81 - 15.56 = 7.25). As a multiple of a year's median pay, SJMSOM's fee is 15.56 divided by 26.0 (its 2024-26 median), about 0.6, and IIM Jammu's is 22.81 divided by 15.0, about 1.5. Other IIT departments publish their own fee sheets, so check them.

Infrastructure and Resources

IIT MBA:

Students access IIT libraries, research facilities, computing infrastructure, and cross-departmental courses. The ecosystem is mature and well-funded.

New IIMs:

Many new IIMs still operate from temporary campuses or are building infrastructure. The ecosystem is developing.

Verdict: IIT MBA programs typically offer superior infrastructure.

Alumni Network

IIT MBA:

Smaller but concentrated alumni networks. Strong connections in specific sectors (tech, manufacturing, consulting). Access to the broader IIT alumni network.

New IIMs:

Very young alumni networks. Limited senior alumni in decision-making positions.

Verdict: IIT MBA programs have more established, though smaller, alumni networks.

When IIT MBA Is the Right Choice

IIT MBA can make sense in these scenarios.

1. You Are a Non-Engineer Seeking Tech Credibility

This is the situation the Reddit poster faced. As a non-engineer, joining an IIT for MBA provides tech ecosystem exposure that other programs cannot match. You will study alongside engineering students, understand technical concepts through electives, and graduate with the IIT network.

2. Your CAT Score Is 85-92 Percentile

In this range some IIT programmes are worth a look while top IIMs remain out of reach, but eligibility differs: VGSoM asks for at least 90 percentile in the general category, and the other IITs use composite scores. Check each programme's own criteria before you plan around it.

3. You Want Manufacturing or Core Sector Careers

Some IIT programmes report hiring in manufacturing, power and oil and gas. If these sectors interest you, check the sector-wise split in each programme's placement report.

4. You Value Research and Technical Depth

If you want an MBA that includes technical rigor, access to research, and interdisciplinary learning, IIT MBA programs deliver this uniquely.

5. You Are Cost-Conscious

SJMSOM's 2026-28 fee is lower than IIM Jammu's, and the IIT medians in the table above are higher than the newer IIMs'. Compare the fee as a multiple of one year's pay for each option.

When IIT MBA Might Not Be Right

Honest assessment requires acknowledging limitations.

1. You Want Classic MBA Soft Skills Focus

IIT MBA programs lean technical and analytical. If you want heavy emphasis on leadership development, organizational behavior, and soft skills, traditional B-schools may serve better.

2. You Want Large Batch Networking

With 49 to 125 graduates a year, IIT MBA programs create smaller networks than IIMs with batches of 400 or more. If network size matters more than network quality, consider this trade-off.

3. You Have Very High CAT Scores

If you score 98+ percentile, explore IIM options first. IIT MBA is excellent, but the established IIMs remain the gold standard for those who can access them.

4. You Want Mumbai-Based Finance Roles

While SJMSOM IIT Bombay is in Mumbai, the broader IIT MBA ecosystem has less concentration in investment banking and private equity compared to top IIMs.

The Interview Process at IIT MBA Programs

Understanding how IIT MBA interviews differ from IIM interviews is crucial for preparation.

Selection Criteria

The two programmes that publish their formula show how much CAT counts, and how much else does:

• DoMS IIT Madras: CAT carries 75% of the shortlisting composite score. Past academics, work experience, gender diversity and academic discipline make up the rest. The final offer then depends on the composite score, a reflective writing test, the interview and achievements
• VGSoM IIT Kharagpur: The final score is application rating 20, CAT 40 and WAT-PI 40, after a minimum CAT percentile of 90 for the general category

This means an 88 percentile candidate cannot count on strong academics alone: where a minimum percentile is published, it applies first.

Application Timeline and Process

Here is what the last IIT MBA admission cycle looked like, using official dates.

Stage 1: CAT Score

IIT MBA programmes use CAT scores. Applications open after the CAT result, not before it.

Stage 2: Application

At IIT Madras, applications opened on 25 December 2025, the day after the CAT 2025 result, and closed on 31 January 2026, later extended to 8 February 2026.

Stage 3: Shortlisting and Interview

Shortlists use a composite score. SJMSOM invited shortlisted candidates to campus from 5 to 8 March 2026. IIT Madras held interviews and the writing test in March 2026, including sessions in Kolkata on 28 and 29 March.

Stage 4: Offers

VGSoM released its first-round offers between 1 and 5 May 2026.

Key Dates to Track

CAT 2026 is on 29 November 2026 and its result is expected in the first week of January 2027. Based on the last cycle, expect:

• IIT MBA applications: January to early February 2027
• Interviews: March 2027
• Offers: April to May 2027

These 2027 dates are expected, not announced. Check each department's page after the CAT result.

Practical Decision Framework

If you are at 85-92 percentile, check which IIT programmes will consider you: VGSoM's general-category minimum is 90, and the other IITs use composite scores. If you are 95+, prioritize established IIMs first.

IIT MBA composite scoring means your overall profile matters. Academics, work experience and diversity add to your CAT score, but where a minimum percentile is published, it still applies first.

Step 3: Research Specific Programs

Do not treat IIT MBA as a category. Each program has distinct strengths. SJMSOM IIT Bombay differs from DoMS IIT Roorkee. Research which aligns with your goals.

Step 4: Compare Against Alternatives

List your realistic options at your percentile. Compare IIT MBA against new IIMs, Tier-2 programs like IMT or IMI, and other alternatives. Evaluate on brand, placements, fees, and fit.

Step 5: Prepare for Interviews Specifically

Once you have calls, prepare for IIT MBA interview style specifically. The preparation differs from IIM interviews.
