Can SNAP Success Happen After CAT Disappointment? The Honest Truth

It is 11 PM. The CAT results are out. You stare at the screen, refreshing multiple times hoping the number will change. It does not.

Whether you scored 85 percentile when you expected 95, or 92 when you needed 99 for IIM ABC, the feeling is the same. Disappointment. Confusion. And the question that will not leave your mind: What now?

Here is what nobody tells you clearly: SNAP is not just a backup anymore. For many candidates, it has become a strategic choice.

Understanding What SNAP Actually Offers

SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test) is the gateway to 29 MBA programmes across 17 Symbiosis institutes in the SNAP 2026 cycle. But for most serious MBA candidates, only a few matter:

Tier 1 SNAP Colleges:

• SIBM Pune (Symbiosis Institute of Business Management)
• SCMHRD (Symbiosis Centre for Management and Human Resource Development)

Tier 2 SNAP Colleges:

• SIIB Pune (International Business focus)
• SIBM Bangalore

Two comments are not a consensus, so here are the numbers.

The Numbers: Fees, Placements, and ROI

SIBM Pune:

• Tuition: Rs 24.9 lakh for the 2025-27 batch (four instalments of Rs 6,22,500), plus hostel and mess. The 2026-28 fee sheet is published on sibm.edu, so check it for the current amounts
• Final placements, batch 2024-26 (official report): average Rs 28.18 lakh, median Rs 27.00 lakh, highest Rs 74.84 lakh, more than 110 recruiters
• Average pay by function in the same report: Marketing Rs 29.48 lakh, HR Rs 26.09 lakh, Finance Rs 25.73 lakh

Median pay for the batch that graduated in 2023-24 (NIRF data, same year for every school):

• SIBM Pune: Rs 25.0 lakh
• IIM Udaipur: Rs 18.0 lakh
• IIM Jammu: Rs 15.0 lakh (fee for 2026-28: Rs 22.81 lakh)
• IIM Sambalpur: Rs 13.15 lakh
• IIM Bodh Gaya: Rs 13.0 lakh
• IIM Sirmaur: Rs 12.98 lakh

The ROI calculation: Tuition of Rs 24.9 lakh divided by the batch average of Rs 28.18 lakh a year is 0.88 years, about 10.6 months of pay before tax. Using the median of Rs 27 lakh, it is 0.92 years, about 11 months. This counts tuition only. It leaves out hostel and mess, income tax and the salary you give up for two years, so the real payback takes longer.

When SNAP Makes More Sense Than Retaking CAT

Choose SNAP/SIBM if:

1. You are a marketing or HR aspirant
2. You have significant work experience
3. You value location and campus life
4. You cannot afford another year of uncertainty

Consider retaking CAT if:

1. You scored significantly below your mock performance
2. You are targeting IIM ABC specifically for investment banking or consulting
3. You are young with no work experience

Timing in the CAT 2026 Cycle

The order of events matters here. SNAP 2026 registration closes on 25 November 2026, before CAT 2026 is held on 29 November 2026. The SNAP tests are on 13, 19 and 26 December 2026, and the CAT 2026 result is expected in the first week of January 2027. The SNAP 2026 result comes on 12 January 2027.

So SNAP works as a parallel option that you register for before you know your CAT result. XAT 2027 follows the same pattern: registration closes on 6 December 2026 and the test is on 3 January 2027.

The Interview Preparation Factor

SNAP interviews through the GE-PI (Group Exercise and Personal Interview) format test different things. The group exercise component is unique to Symbiosis and requires specific preparation.

The candidates who convert SIBM and SCMHRD calls have typically:

• Practiced group exercises specifically, not just GDs
• Understood Symbiosis's focus on holistic development
• Built narratives that resonate with Symbiosis's values

The Bottom Line: Is SNAP Success Possible After CAT Disappointment?

Yes, it can. The points to keep in mind:

1. SIBM Pune's placement numbers are strong for marketing and HR careers.
2. The newer IIMs are not automatically better than top SNAP colleges on reported pay.
3. Your career is determined by what you do at the college, not just which college you attend.
